South African Surfer's Volume One Number One was published in April, 1965. Harry Bold, together with a team of staff and contributing photographers that included, Andrew Ogilvy, Philip Goldkorn, Anthony Morris, Rodger Ashe and Brian Wilson. John Whitmore was the Cape correspondent and international contributions were made by Bud Browne and Parker Reis of the USA; and John Pennings and Dick Evans of Australia.

The magazine produced 12 quarterly issues and ceased puclication in 1968. SA Surfer recognized the need for an accurate reflection of the South African surfing scene in the midst of "grossly misleading" journalism about surfing in that era and applied themselve to create a "world of authentic information"
