The Location

The eThekwini Municipality recently chose Surfing Heritage South Africa as the preferred tenant to occupy the Pumphouse building located at Dairy Beach, the primary surfing beach within the recently upgraded Central Beachfront and within what is known as Beach Node 3. The 'Pumphouse' building sits immediately South of Rachel Finlayson Pool and is set back of the Beach Promenade overlooking and partly framing the Fountain Court (the event space created in the demolition of the former Ocean Sports Centre). The Surfing Heritage Centre's proposed cafe has a prime view of the of New Pier - Durban's premier surf spot and South African surfing's competitive proving ground . The building originally served as a deck chair and umbrella store, which was later converted to accommodate the Rachel Finlayson Pool's chlorination plant, which has been relocated beneath the Rachel Finlayson Grandstand.
